Lopez Lake Triathalon

My post-baby goal was to compete in triathalon, since Jackson is over a year, I decided it was time to commit. Friday night we drove up to Lopez Lake, north about 3.5hrs. We got there in the evening and the weather was PERFECT. There was a lot of close up wildlife, so Steven was entertined! Here are the Boyle Boys in front of some turkeys:

And now in front of some deer:

Fridy morning I woke up with a sty, but Race day I woke up with my eye looking like this:

The morning was very cold, Jackson and Steve were troopers. Here is the "transition area" where you put your bike and running shoes etc. We had to walk about 100yrds in our bare feet down the boat ramp to the lake. I thought these triathalon people are crazy!

Here we are at the starting line. The water was actually warmer than the outside air. I know that the swim doesn't look that far, but it seemed far when I was in the water! I was slower at the swim than I anticipated.

From swim to bike trying to get the wetsuit off.

Thanks Lindsay for letting me use your wetsuit!!

I was most worried about the biking, driving the route it seemed mostly uphill, but it was actually my favorite event.

Because I was so slow at the swim, I kept passing people on the bike! It was cold, but a fog from the ocean came in (Lopez lake is about 20 miles from the coast) and the air tasted like salt, it was really pretty and because there was so much uphill there was also a lot of downhill.

Here I go running (3miles).

Steve and Jackson are having a great time watching mom's race...

See the end of the post for a video of the finish. It was a great race. It took me back to the old cross country days!

Here are the results for my age group. My goal was to fnish in under 2 hours. My time is 1hr 37min.
Here are we are recovering.

See the magic apple?

Here is Jackson on the ride home. Love the little guy!
Here's the finish, don't blink or you might miss it!

Thanks to everyone who loaned me gear, motivated me, helped me train, and gave me advice! It was a really fun event, I hope to do it again in the future.

Haircut and Beach Day!

Jackson and Madison have been together a lot lately. Here are a few pictures of what they've been up to (pre-haircut).

They pulled the baby-walker out from underneath the crib and sat in it folded up. Jackson never had much interest in this when he was a baby, but now I guess it's loads of fun.

I take no responsibility for Madison's black eye. She fell off a chair at her place.

"Mom, I really need a haircut. My hair is almost as long as Madison's."
Saturday morning we had Madison over since the menfolk were at Ayuda- a free dental clinic USC puts on once month- and Mallie (Madison's mom) was at work. She fell asleep on the couch, so I took the opportunity to cut Jackson's hair. Distrcting him, of course, by letting him brush his own teeth.

Voila, all done!

Pretty good for an ametur I think. Thanks for the tips Aunt Jenna!

Post haircut wrestling.
Jackson loves to follow Madison around and do whatever she is doing!

Monday night for FHE we went to Bolsa Chica State Beach with some of my coworkers who are also training for a triathalon. The race I am doing involves a lake swim, but theirs is an ocean swim, so we did a practice run. I figured if I can swim in the ocean, I can swim in a lake.
Unfortunately it was as uber windy. I felt like I was back in Idaho.

"That's one big ocean!"

"Ha ha ha, you just wait until I get down and run around in this sand."

Here we are embarking on our swim. I swallowed lots of salt water. It was disgusting. This picture doesn't do it justice, but the waves were so big it was really impossible to do any "swimming".
Here is Jackson digging in the dirt.

And here he is laughing about being messy!

Jackson and mom.

A note about wetsuits: Thanks Lindsay for letting me borrow your suit, and they are so amazing. It's definitely fun to frolick in the ocean if you have wetsuit on.

Here is Jackson posing with the surf board as the sun sets. "Sigh."
Here is messy Jackson on the way home, sand and cinnamon roll!

It was a great trip. We went late so we didn't have to sit in traffic, we weren't sun-bleached, and my coworkers provided us with a sampling of fine meats and cheeses (and wines, which we obviously didn't sample) to tide us over. Loving dental school!

Disneyland

Not that the summer heat and crowds are over, I've been wanting to take a trip to Disneyland. Monday morning we went with Madison and her mom Mallie to meet up w the Kuchenmeister kids and Ashley. He we are on the way.

Unfortunately, I left my camera in the car, so we don't have any other pictures. Truthfully, Jackson didn't really like any of the rides anyway. It was nap time and they scared him. Which I loved because he just cuddled with me the whole time we were there. His favorite part was when we stopped at this secluded picnic area for lunch and he got to run around with Madison and Ryan.

Today Madison is at our house. Here are Madison and Jackson having breakfast.

Jackson just being cute.
